Export at Bega

Bega began exporting its extensive range of retail cheese products in the early 1990’s, fuelled by strong import demand from non dairying regions, such as the Middle-East and South-East Asia.  To a large extent, Bega exports the same products as it sells in the Australian market, where we are the No. 1 selling brand of cheese.  However we now also tailor make cheese products to suit particular international market requirements.

For example Bega operates the only cheese canning line out of the trans-Tasman region in order to service the demand for this style of presentation into the Middle-East.  At last count Bega was exporting over 60 million units of cheese per year to approximately 40 different countries.  Largest export off takes are to the Middle-East, SE Asia and North Asia, with sales also to central and south America and the Pacific Islands.

Whilst retail product is the focus of the export business, limited volumes of bulk commodity cheddar, butter and whey powder are also exported as required.  The strength of the export business has been in the extensive range of products we can offer across both processed and natural cheddar cheese, from retail, through to the QSR and food service sectors.

Finally, Bega’s export business is built with a customer servicing philosophy, which extends to specialising on contract packing for the international market place.  Bega will willingly pack third party brands owned by other dairy companies, distributors or supermarket chains.

With its acquisition of the Strathmerton processed cheese plant located in regional Victoria, Australia, Bega now has very significant available capacities to service future growth demands, and a dual factory supply capability to mitigate supply risks.
