Our Approach

Understanding what matters most

Bega Group regularly reviews the sustainability topics that matter most to our business and stakeholders. This helps us focus our efforts on the issues that have the greatest impact on the environment, communities and people connected to our business, as well as those that could affect our future success.

In FY2024, we completed our first double materiality assessment with support from an independent third party. The assessment was informed by recognised international sustainability standards and included input from a wide range of stakeholders and looked at both:

  • how Bega Group’s activities impact people and the environment, and
  • the sustainability-related risks and opportunities that could affect our business over time.

We regularly revisit our assessment to reflect changes in our business, operating environment and stakeholder expectations. We gather feedback through a range of channels, including stakeholder interviews, surveys and ongoing engagement activities conducted across the business.

The results help shape our Better Future Strategy and provide an important input into the sustainability information we report. Findings are reviewed by Bega Group’s Risk and Sustainability Committee to ensure we continue focusing on the issues that matter most.

For the purposes of Bega Group’s Better Future reporting, a “material topic” is a topic identified through the materiality assessment.  The use of the term “material” in this context should not be interpreted as a determination of financial materiality or disclosure requirements under applicable laws

Stakeholder engagement

Building strong relationships with our stakeholders is essential to Bega Group’s success. We regularly engage with customers, employees, suppliers, shareholders, business partners, communities and others who are connected to our business.

These conversations help us understand what matters most to our stakeholders and how our actions affect them. The feedback we receive helps shape our decisions, improve the way we work, and identify opportunities to create positive impact.

Open and honest engagement also helps us build trust, respond to changing expectations and work together to address sustainability challenges. By listening and learning from our stakeholders, we can better deliver on our Better Future strategy and create long-term value for our business and the communities we serve.

Governance and oversight

Good governance helps ensure sustainability is embedded in how Bega Group operates and makes decisions. The Board is responsible for overseeing Bega Group’s strategy, including sustainability-related risks, opportunities and performance. The Board is supported by four committees:

  • Risk and Sustainability Committee (RSC) – oversees sustainability, risk management and compliance.
  • Audit Committee (AC) – oversees sustainability-related financial disclosures and reporting.
  • Milk Services Committee (MSC) – provides guidance on the long-term sustainability and quality of milk supply.
  • Nomination, Remuneration, People and Capability Committee (NRPCC) – oversees Board composition, performance and remuneration.

A Sustainability Steering Group (SSG), made up of executives from across the business, supports the delivery of our sustainability strategy. The SSG helps develop targets and policies, monitors performance, manages sustainability risks and coordinates sustainability reporting. It provides regular updates to the Risk and Sustainability Committee and Board.

The Board regularly reviews its skills, experience and performance to ensure it can effectively oversee the business and respond to emerging sustainability and governance issues. Sustainability is also reflected in our remuneration framework, with safety, quality and environmental performance considered in incentive outcomes.
